NCRB Launches Mobile App ‘NCRB Sankalan Of Criminal Laws’; New Criminal Laws To Come Into Force From July 1
- National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has launched a Mobile App “NCRB Sankalan of Criminal Laws” to serve as a comprehensive guide providing complete information about the new criminal laws at one place. The New criminal laws will come into force from the 1st of July, 2024.
- This App is a compilation of new criminal laws namely Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. It provides an Index linking all Chapters and Sections of the new laws. This App is useful for the General Public, Court Officers, Advocates, Law Students as well as for Police Officers in enhancing their knowledge about the New Criminal Laws.
- Sankalan app has been designed for navigating through new criminal laws as a bridge between old and new criminal laws. This app will work as a comprehensive guide for all stakeholders. The app will work in offline mode as well and its availability has been ensured in far-flung areas so that all stakeholders can have access to desired information around the clock.
Centre Approves ₹50 Lakh Grants Each For 7 Startups In Technical Textiles To Boost Innovation And Sustainability
- The Ministry of Textiles has approved Rs. 50 Lakh each for seven startups in Technical Textiles to boost innovation and sustainability and to foster transformative developments that will shape the industry’s future. Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles Rachna Shah has said this while chairing the 7th meeting of the Empowered Programme Committee of the National Technical Textiles Mission in New Delhi.
- In addition to approving startup funding, the EPC has allocated INR 6.4 Cr to IIT Guwahati. This funding will support the introduction of new technical textiles subjects and the enhancement of laboratory infrastructure within the institute’s Civil Engineering Department.
- The grants have been approved under the NTTM’s Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT) scheme. This initiative aims to encourage young innovators, scientists, technologists, and startup ventures to transform their ideas into commercial technologies and products, thereby fostering self-reliance in India
Young innovators shine at the ‘Student Entrepreneurship Program – Seed the Future Entrepreneurs’ finale organized by Atal Innovation Mission and La Fondation Dassault Systemes India
- Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) in collaboration with La Fondation Dassault Systemes India celebrated the culmination of its flagship program for school students, ‘Made in 3D – Seed the Future Entrepreneurs’ under AIM’s Student Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) season – 2023-24 during the grand finale held in Pune. This event marked the conclusion of an eight-month journey dedicated to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among young minds.
- The season 2023-24 of this program witnessed a special focus on connecting students with Krishi Vigyan Kendras, resulting in a significant number of projects centered around the rural ecosystem theme.
- From 140 schools across India, the top 12 teams showcased remarkable innovation in product design and demonstrated a keen understanding of finance, business, and marketing strategies in their start-up pitches.
IGNCA signs MoU with Sansad TV
- To make Indian art and culture more accessible to the people, an important agreement has been signed between the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and Sansad TV.
- Under this, programmes produced by IGNCA will be telecast on Sansad TV and Sansad TV will also be able to use the content from IGNCA’s cultural archives.
- The MoU was signed by Member Secretary, Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi on behalf of IGNCA and Chief Executive Officer, Shri Rajat Punhani on behalf of Sansad TV.
Amravati Will Be The Capital Of Andhra Pradesh: Chandrababu Naidu
- Andhra Pradesh chief minister, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu announced that Amaravati will be the state capital. He added that Visakhapatnam will be developed as the economic capital and an advanced special city.
- The announcement was made during the NDA Legislative Party meeting in Vijayawada, where Naidu was unanimously elected as the alliance’s leader of the House. His nomination was proposed by Jana Sena Party chief K Pawan Kalyan and supported by BJP state president and newly elected MP D Purandeswari.

India slips in Global Gender Gap Index, ranks 129th
- According to the Global Gender Gap Index released by the World Economic Forum , India has slipped two places to the 129th position, while Iceland retained its top spot. Within South Asia, India ranked fifth after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, with Pakistan ranked last.
- In the global rankings, Iceland is followed by Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden in the top five. The United Kingdom holds the 14th position, while the United States is ranked 43rd.
- India also figured among the group of nations to have one of the lowest level economic gender parity. India’s economic parity stood at 39.8 per cent. This means that women in India on an average earn Rs 39.8 for every Rs 100 that men earn.
- The report also noted that India has closed 64.1 per cent of its gender gap in 2024. While India’s economic parity score has been improving, it needs to increase by 6.2 percentage points to return to its 2012 level of 46 per cent, the report says.
- While India ranked one on gender parity in terms of secondary education enrolment, it ranked 105th in tertiary enrolment, 124th on literacy rate and 89th in primary education enrolment. This led to a sharp drop from 26th to 112th in the educational attainment subindex.It ranked 65th on political empowerment of women and 10th on parity in the number of years with female/male heads of state over the last 50 years.
- In the economic parity and opportunity subindex, India ranked 142nd, same as 2023, India maintained its position at 142nd on the health and survival index.

US Federal Reserve Bank Keeps Its Benchmark Interest Rate Between 5.25pc And 5.50pc
- The US Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) voted unanimously to keep its benchmark interest rate between 5.25 and 5.50 percent, and said that “modest” progress had been made toward its long-term inflation target of 2 percent.
- The announcement suggests that central bank officials remain wary about cutting rates too soon, despite consumer inflation data published recently , which pointed to a slowdown in the rate of price increases in May.

India’s IIP Records Growth Of 5% In First Month Of FY 2024-25
- India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a growth of 5 percent for April 2024 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
- The IIP growth rate in April 2023 was 4.6 percent. According to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, growth rates of mining sector for the month of April 2024 over April 2023 was 6.7 percent while the manufacturing sector recorded a growth of 3.9 percent and electricity for the same period grew by 10.2 percent.
- However, the industrial output growth has declined to a three-month low on a month-on-month basis. The IIP slowed to 5 per cent in April, as against 5.4 per cent in March and 5.6 percent in February 2024.
Retail Inflation Eases To 12-Month Low Of 4.75 Percent In May
- Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based headline retail inflation eased to a 12-month low of 4.75 per cent in May on the back of a softening core and fuel inflation, even though food inflation remained elevated. Separately, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) also moderated to 5 per cent in April from an upwardly revised figure of 5.4 per cent in the preceding month.
- Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that food inflation remained sticky at 8.69 per cent in May from 8.7 per cent in April, driven by acceleration in the prices of cereals (8.69 per cent), eggs (7.62 per cent), fruits (6.68 per cent) and pulses (17.14 per cent).
- Though the prices of vegetables (27.3 per cent) decelerated as compared to the preceding month, they still saw a double-digit rise in May. The prices for protein-rich items like meat and fish (7.28 per cent), sugar (5.7 per cent) and milk (2.62 per cent) decelerated during the month.
APPOINTMENTS
Ajit Doval Reappointed NSA; P.K. Mishra To Continue As Principal Secy To PM Modi
- Ajit Doval has been reappointed as the National Security Advisor and Dr PK Mishra as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister with effect from June 10. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointments.
- The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions said that the appointments of Former IPS Mr Doval and Former IAS Mr Mishra will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Both Mr Doval and Mr Mishra will be assigned the rank of a cabinet minister in the table of precedence during their term in office.
- The committee has also approved the appointment of Retired IAS officers Amit Khare and Tarun Kapoor as advisors to the Prime Minister. The appointments of both officers will be in the rank and scale of secretary to Government for a period of two years with effect from 10th July or until further orders, whichever is earlier. These appointments will be on a contract basis as per usual terms and conditions.
BJP Leader Pema Khandu Sworn In As Arunachal Pradesh CM For Third Consecutive Term
- Senior BJP leader Pema Khandu took oath as the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive term. Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt. Gen. KT Parnaik (Retd.) administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other state cabinet ministers.
- Along with Khandu, 11 other cabinet ministers were also sworn in at a function held at DK Convention hall in Itanagar. The state Cabinet Ministers are Chowna Mein, Byuram Bage, Nyato Dukam, Gabriel D Wangshu, Wangki Lowang, PD Sona, Mama Natung, Smt Dasanglu Pul, Balo Raja , Kento Jini and Ojing Tasing.
- In the recently concluded Andhra Pradesh assembly election, simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won 46 out of the 60 seats. The party had already won 10 seats unopposed before the polls. The NPP, a constituent of the NDA government at the Centre, came second with five seats, the NCP won three seats, the PPA bagged two seats, and the Congress won one seat.

Former Football Coach T K Chathunni Passes Away At 80 In Kerala
- Former football player and noted football coach T K Chathunni, aged 80, passed away at a private hospital at Karukutty in Ernakulam district in Kerala.
- A strong defender, Chathunni played for India in the 1973 Merdeka Cup in Kuala Lumpur and a few other tournaments. He also played Santosh Trophy for Services and Goa and later rose to prominence as one of India’s top coaches.
- During his peak, many felt Chathunni was a coach with the Midas touch and he was sought after by some of the country’s biggest clubs in Goa, Kerala and Bengal where he guided Mohun Bagan to its first National League title in 1997-98. He was also Kerala’s Santosh Trophy coach in 1979.
Sarod Maestro Rajeev Taranath Passes Away At 91
- Sarod maestro of international repute Rajeev Taranath has passed away in Mysuru in Karnataka after a prolonged illness. He was 91.
- He has composed music for many internationally acclaimed Kannada films including Samskara, Kanchana Sita and Kadavu. He served as the head of the Indian music programme at the World Music department of the California Institute of the Arts.
- He is the recipient of Padma Shri award in 2019. He is also honoured with Central Sangeet Natak Academy award, the state Sangeet Vidwan award, Chowdiah award, Kannada Rajyotsava Award given by Karnataka state Government among others for his valuable contribution to Indian classical music.
